To Homeschool? or Not

I woke up with this thought going through my head and decided to share it.

About 2 weeks ago I was sitting on the sidelines of my children’s track practice talking to another homeschool  mom.  She was talking to me about this speaker she was listening to (I can’t remember the name.  I had never heard of him before) who made the comment, “If we continue to send our children to Caesar for their education, we need to stop being surprised when they come home as Romans.”

When she said that I shared with her this scripture that came to me as she was speaking.

They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s(Matthew 22:21)

And the thought hit me.  To whom do our children belong? To us? To God?  To the government?

Even though me and my husband have been made stewards over the gifts and blessings of our children I daresay that our children belong to God.  The Lord has given us a very clear and sound principle in this verse…whatever belongs to Caesar, give it him but whatever belongs to God, then give it to HIM.

Such a simple statement packs such a big wallop.  To obey this principle of giving God what belongs to Him in many instances in life, in whatever situation, is going to demand a walk of faith, much sacrifice and complete trust in the Lord.  Many times it will go against the grain of what we have been taught and against what “the world” or this current culture is doing.

Yes, homeschooling is a gigantic undertaking but that is one reason God doesn’t give us all the instruction we will ever need to homeschool all at one time.  It is line upon line, precept upon precept, as we mature and can handle the next step, He’ll give us direction on the next step to take.  As we obey, we grow.  As we grow and are changed from glory to glory then we begin to see things a little clearer and understand a bit more.

To homeschool or not?  Such a thought-provoking question with very deep implications and questions that need to be prayed over and sought out

I see sending my children to public school as giving them over to Caesar.  In making the decision to homeschool I did not want to turn my children over to an institution run by the devil.    In conversation with my dh over this subject he doesn’t see it that way, although he supports me 100% in homeschooling our children.  My dh pointed out that publicly schooled children can be okay as long as the parents are super-involved in the education of the child, stay on top of the teachers and what the child is taught and if they are teaching and modeling the correct thing at home as well as spending quality time with the child.

Another point that comes up in this discussion is what of Joseph in the Bible and Daniel?  They both were educated in the culture of the pagan nation they were living in at the time but yet God used both of them mightily…they kept their commitment/relationship with God.   Or what about the Apostle Paul?

Well, I don’t have a conclusion on this…as to whether every Christian ought to homeschool.  I know what God has laid on my heart and that is what I’m going with.

Until next time….

…One more thing. God’s grace is HUGE! God will meet you where you’re at and not demand that you match up. Some parents haven’t gotten there yet in their understanding and some children actually need to be in P.S. I’m glad people are coming out and saying that Christian children need to be given back to God, but that might not be able to work for some (single parents, for example). So what your husband says is right and you’re right. I think it comes down to every woman obeying her own husband in everything.

Joseph and Daniel weren’t given willingly to the world’s education system, so that’s a big difference there. Also, Timothy was taught at home (like your husband talks about) even though his father wasn’t saved and he still came out okay (LOL!). I think it just depends on if you are trying to follow God’s will for you, and your children. Jesus will make it come out alright in the end.

    HI Jenn,

Thanks for that. I did some research after I typed out this post and found the website you speak of.
